Photon (Spectrum)
Open-source framework and hosted iMessage lines for connecting your own agent to chat apps.
Group: Build-your-own platforms and infrastructure
Photon provides an open-source framework called Spectrum, plus hosted iMessage lines, that lets a developer connect one agent to iMessage, SMS/RCS, WhatsApp Business, Telegram and other chat interfaces. It is infrastructure for people building agents, not an assistant you use directly.
The decision in plain English
Developer infrastructure, not a ready-made assistant. Photon's pricing page lists a free tier, Pro at $25 a month and Business at $250 per dedicated line per month, with Enterprise on request. The Spectrum core is MIT-licensed on GitHub and can be self-hosted. What you cannot judge from the vendor's pages is message deliverability and number reputation at scale, so read its iMessage deliverability docs and test on your own traffic before building a product on it.
Best fit
Developers who want one agent codebase reachable over iMessage and other chat apps without building each integration, and who are comfortable with a hosted messaging dependency or self-hosting.
Poor fit
Anyone looking for a finished assistant to use, or teams that need independently audited uptime, deliverability and data-handling terms before routing customer conversations through a third party.
Documented capabilities
Vendor statements, not verified task outcomes.
- One agent connected to iMessage, WhatsApp Business, Telegram and a terminal provider through Spectrum Source · checked 2026-10-05
- Open-source Spectrum core under the MIT licence, self-hostable Source · checked 2026-10-05
- Managed iMessage lines with SMS/RCS fallback, polls and other iOS 26 features Source · checked 2026-10-05
- Dedicated iMessage lines you own, with group messaging and limited cold outreach Source · checked 2026-10-05
Permissions and human control
- Photon's docs say the Spectrum server owns the agent behaviour (routing, tools, memory, safety) and providers only handle each platform's connection, so what the agent can do is set by the code you write. We did not find a published list of data Photon retains from messages that pass through its hosted lines.
Documented controls do not prove that an agent always follows them.
Limits and open questions
- Infrastructure for builders: you write and run the agent yourself and pay model costs separately
- The 99.95% uptime figure on photon.codes is the vendor's own claim; we did not find an independent status history
- Free tier uses shared managed numbers and is capped at 10 users, Pro at 100 users; unlimited users need the Business plan with Auto Scale, per the pricing page
- Cold outreach is limited to 50 new contacts per day per line on Business, per the pricing page
- Open-source self-hosting runs on your own Mac and uses your iCloud account as the iMessage number, per the pricing page; Photon's docs separate this from its managed lines
- Described by the vendor; not tested by AgentComparison
Privacy and security
Messages to and from your users pass through Photon's hosted iMessage lines unless you self-host. We did not read a privacy policy or terms in depth for this entry, and found no independent audit or published retention period for message content. Check those before routing customer conversations through it.
